Winter in La Petite-Nation, from December to sugaring season

Skating through the woods, snowmobile trails, trout under the ice, village carnivals and warm suppers. What's open and what's worth the drive, December to March.

Winter here goes on for a while. A solid four months, from the first real dump of snow in December to the sap buckets in March. People from the city tend to assume La Petite-Nation goes to sleep. It's the opposite: lakes turn into parking lots for ice huts, ATV trails turn into snowmobile trails, and every village finds an excuse to light a bonfire.

Here's the big picture. Where we've already written a more detailed guide, we link to it along the way.

What's open (and what isn't)

Bad news first. Parc national de Plaisance closes from mid-October to late April. The Manoir-Papineau closes after Thanksgiving too. And the Saturday market at Place du Marché in Ripon wraps up in the fall.

The rest holds up. Parc Oméga in Notre-Dame-de-Bonsecours is open all year, and in winter it adds snowshoeing in the forest and tube sliding. Deer begging for carrots with snow up to their bellies beats July, honestly. Our Parc Oméga tips work in any season.

The Centre d'exposition Napoléon-Bourassa in Montebello runs four shows a year, free, Thursday to Sunday. And Ripon's Market Fridays keep going all winter: supper at the bistro, a concert at 6:30 p.m.

Out in the snow

Cross-country skiing and snowshoeing

It doesn't have to cost much. The Pères Montfortains trails, behind the high school in Papineauville, have 8.5 km of groomed track, free, dogs welcome. The Clarence-Savoie loop in Montebello is a free 5 km snowshoe loop up the mountain. In Lac-Simon, 16 km of ski and snowshoe trails cross private land the owners lend out for the winter. Stay on the trails, that's how they stay open.

For bigger networks, Club Skira in Duhamel keeps up more than 40 km in the wildlife reserve for $15 a season. The Club de golf Héritage in Notre-Dame-de-la-Paix turns into a ski and snowshoe network, with rentals on site.

Skating

The forest skating trail in Lac-Simon winds through the woods, lit at night, with a heated cabin to lace up. Montebello's covered rink has a roof, so even freezing rain doesn't shut it down. In Thurso, the Guy-Lafleur arena, built in 1948, has free public skating. And the Saint-Émile-de-Suffolk dome is often the first outdoor ice to open around here.

For teens, there's disco skating at the Complexe Whissell in Saint-André-Avellin: December 19, January 9, February 27 and March 13, 6 to 9 p.m.

Snowmobiles and dog sleds

Four volunteer clubs keep the trails going: the Association des motoneigistes Vallée de la Nation, Les Maraudeurs in Duhamel, Les Voyageurs des Collines et Ravins in Mulgrave-et-Derry, and the Association des motoneigistes de l'Outaouais, which runs from Gatineau up to Val-des-Bois.

Rather have dogs than an engine? The Seppala team at Chiens de traîneau Gatineau in Saint-Sixte, Meute Tanwen in Montpellier, where you drive your own team, or La Meute du Wendigo in Lac-des-Plages. Book ahead.

The full rundown is in winter in La Petite-Nation, from cross-country skis to snowmobiles.

Ice fishing

Most lakes around here are closed to trout in winter. It stays open from December 20 to March 31 in four places: Lac de la Ferme in Duhamel, Lac Croche and Lac Mulet in Montpellier, and Lac Vert in Val-des-Bois. No gear? Sépaq's Centre touristique du Lac-Simon has a package on Lac de la Ferme: five holes already drilled, five tip-ups, worms and hot drinks. Book 24 hours ahead.

Permits and rules are in our ice fishing guide.

December and the holidays

The Montebello Christmas market runs two weekends, November 27 to 29 and December 4 to 6, 2026. Chénéville's is Saturday, December 5. The Plaisance tractor parade rolls through on a Saturday night in early December. Dress the kids warmly, the crowds are big. In Ripon, Noël des Pins lights up every night until December 24.

In Thurso, the Optimist Club hands out Christmas stockings on December 13 and holds its turkey bingo on the 20th.

February, carnival month

February is the big one. The Canadian Ski Marathon is based around Montebello from February 5 to 7, 2027. The Fatbike Festival follows from February 26 to 28. In between, the villages throw their parties: the Ripon Carnival, usually mid-February, Thurso's toward the end of the month, the Lac-Simon winter party on a February Saturday with fireworks, and the torchlight walk in the Bowman forest on a late-February Saturday night. Young anglers get Pêche en herbe on Lac Croche, with free permits for ages 6 to 17.

Nights indoors

When it's -25, you go out indoors. The Salle Desjardins in Papineauville has comedy and music from September to April, and Cinémaboule screens a film there every other Thursday. The Saint-Sixte barn dances come back on December 18, February 19 and March 19, with a caller who walks you through the steps. It's capped at 70 people, so reserve.

Warming up

After a day outside: Café des Orties, in Ripon's old presbytery. Fabrik Café in Chénéville, for hot chocolate and a board game. Café Passe ton temps in Saint-André-Avellin and its hundred jigsaw puzzles. In Duhamel, at Rendez-vous du Chevreuil, you eat while deer and wild turkeys wander past the window (closed Monday and Tuesday).

For supper at the cottage, Boucherie Les Produits David in Chénéville makes tourtières and cipaille, and at Marché Faubert in Montpellier, it's the homemade pies that sell out. Full disclosure: we're regular customers at both.

March, on the way out

In late February, Chez Ti-Mousse in Papineauville opens its sugar shack every day. The Ripon co-op posts the date of its sugaring-season market on Facebook. The Thurso Knights of Columbus hold their fishing day on the ice in late March. And La Crémerie 321 reopens in late March, for people who eat soft-serve in a toque. Next up: spring in La Petite-Nation and our sugar shack guide.

On the road

Winter tires are mandatory from December 1 to March 15 for Québec-plated vehicles. Ontario plates are exempt, but our hills in January don't check your plates. Before heading north on the 321, 317 or 309, check Québec 511 and our Conditions page, which pulls together weather alerts, roads and rivers.

In Duhamel, deer cross right through the village, mostly in the morning and around 4 p.m. Slow down. Between Fassett and Ontario, a marked ice bridge takes over from the ferry once the river freezes enough. Check before you try it.

Plenty of areas still have no cell service. On a trail, a sled or a frozen lake, tell someone where you're going.

For cottage owners

A few things for the fridge door. Hydro-Québec outages: 1 800 790-2424, 24 hours a day. The hospital that serves the MRC is in Buckingham, not here, so plan for the drive. The CLSCs in Saint-André-Avellin and Val-des-Bois are often closer for routine care. Everything else is in the practical guide.
