Optimist Club Christmas stockings and turkey bingo
ThursoDecember 13, 2026Two December traditions in Thurso: the Christmas stocking giveaway, then the Optimist Club's turkey bingo.
Town · MRC de Papineau
Guy Lafleur's hometown, with an electric ferry to Ontario.

Scots from Thurso, in Scotland, opened Lochaber township in the early 1800s. Thurso split off in 1886 and became a city in 1963, still the only one in the MRC. The rest of the story is wood: the railway arrived in 1877, Singer (yes, the sewing machine company) set up in 1925 and built a line to Duhamel, and the pulp mill changed hands several times before production stopped in 2019.
That's not the end of it. On the old mill site, Evolys started commissioning a biocarbon plant in late 2025. Around it, rue Galipeau and rue Victoria keep the town going. Gatineau is 48 km away.
And then there's Guy Lafleur. An eight-foot bronze on Place Guy-Lafleur in front of city hall, the arena named after him, and since 2023, Highway 50 too. Nobody here needs it explained.
