Spring in La Petite-Nation, from sugar shacks to Canada geese
An all-you-can-eat sugar shack meal, thousands of geese in Plaisance, an Easter egg hunt in the woods and the manor reopening. What happens when La Petite-Nation thaws.

Spring here doesn't start on March 20. It starts when the sap buckets go up and the river starts to roar. Between late February and late May, La Petite-Nation goes from snowmobiles to bikes, with a mandatory detour through the sugar shack.
Yes, it's September. But if you're the one organizing the group sugar-shack outing, you might as well start thinking now. Here's what happens in spring in La Petite-Nation, and what reopens.
Sugaring season
The sugar shack meal
At Chez Ti-Mousse in Papineauville, it's the all-you-can-eat sugar shack meal with all the classics. And you can bring your own wine. It's open every day from late February to late April. The kind of outing you do with a group at least once a spring, even if you regret that third piece of pie.

Local maple producers
Plenty of sugarbushes make syrup without serving meals. Go stock up, or look for their products elsewhere.
- Jardin des Érables, Namur: maple products sold at markets and online, with 1% of sales going to an environmental group. Visits by appointment.
- Boileau d'érable, Boileau: small-batch syrup and maple butter that customers rave about in their reviews.
- Érablière Petite-Nation, Notre-Dame-de-la-Paix: a syrup producer on Rang Thomas.
- Sucrerie Viceroy, Ripon, on chemin Viceroy.
- Érablière du Lac-Simon, in Duhamel.
- Ferme À Sabourin, Ripon: on the same land since 1927, with syrup in spring.
Call or message before you show up, especially if you want a visit.
The maple market
Place du Marché in Ripon holds an off-season maple market during sugaring season. The co-op posts the date on its website and Facebook page.
For a maple gift that works all year, Boutique François Lambert in Notre-Dame-de-la-Paix makes maple popcorn, maple cotton candy, and Dragon's Tears, a maple and coffee blend.
Easter in the villages
Small villages keep it simple, and that's the charm.
- The Easter Egg Market, Bowman: a big outdoor egg hunt in the woods at Forêt Bowman regional park, with draws and chocolate to win. Usually the weekend before Easter, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
- The Easter Trail, Val-des-Bois: a guided trail for families on Easter Saturday. Registration is required, with a deadline about a week before.
- Easter at Lac-Simon: face painting, crafts, hot chocolate and Easter surprises for the little ones, on Easter Saturday.
- The Easter egg hunt, Papineauville: free, Easter Monday from 10 a.m. to noon.

The geese of Plaisance
The big spring show is free, and it comes from the sky. Every spring, Canada geese arrive by the thousands at Parc national de Plaisance, and the birders follow. The park opens in late April. Between the bays, marshes and peninsulas, bring binoculars.

Outside, between seasons
Spring is mud season. During the thaw, check trail conditions before you go. Montagnes Noires in Ripon is open every day. The Parcours Louis-Joseph-Papineau, between Saint-André-Avellin and Saint-Sixte, switches from skis to bikes.
Before heading to a sugar shack or maple farm, call or check their page. In spring, everything depends on how the sap runs.
