Town · MRC de Papineau
Where the north end of La Petite-Nation does its errands.

If you have a cottage up north in La Petite-Nation, you've been on Chénéville's rue Principale, probably this week. Routes 321 and 315 cross here and everyone from the surrounding lakes ends up passing through for groceries, hardware, the caisse, the pharmacy, the bakery and the butcher. You can do it all on foot, which is rare this far north.
The name comes from Pierre Hercule Chéné, a merchant who opened Hartwell's first post office in 1864. Chénéville and Vinoy merged in 1996. There are four named lakes in town: Dumouchel, Georges, Lafontaine and Noël.
In summer the population jumps with the Lac Simon cottagers and the main street feels it right away. Useful to know: Chénéville has tourist-zone status, so shops can open on statutory holidays.
