What is the Petite-monnaie?

The Petite-monnaie is a local complementary currency backed by the Canadian dollar. At participating businesses, you can pay your bill in dollars or in petite-monnaie. Businesses then pay each other partly in petite-monnaie, which keeps it circulating in the community. Its value never changes, so there is no reason to hoard it: its purpose is to be spent to strengthen the local economy of the MRC de Papineau.

How do you get it?

  • Through the Petite-monnaie mobile app, on Google Play and the App Store (top-ups through Zeffy, activated within one or two business days).
  • At an exchange office: a sealed envelope of 105 petites-monnaies costs $100, paid in cash or by debit card.
  • From the online shop at pmonnaie.ca, by mail (fees apply).

Each conversion from dollars to petite-monnaie comes with a 5% bonus. Up to $500 can be converted at a time. For example, $200 gets you 210 petites-monnaies; after that, prices are the same in dollars and in petite-monnaie.

Can a business limit the amount it accepts?

Yes. A business may accept only part of a payment in petite-monnaie. The minimum accepted depends on the bill: $200 for a bill of $0 to $300, $300 from $300 to $500, $400 from $500 to $1,000, $500 from $1,000 to $5,000, and $1,000 above $5,000.

Where does the Petite-monnaie come from?

Around 2018, the Coopérative de solidarité Place du Marché in Ripon created a first currency used among its producers, the Grosleau, named in memory of David Grosleau, the founder of Ripon. In 2023, with support from the Agrolab, the co-op launched the Petite-monnaie across the region. The name was suggested by Félix Fallon, a farmer at the Ripon public market.
