Buying and selling safely
For everyone
- Meet in a public place in daylight, ideally in a safe exchange zone (police station or town hall parking lot).
- Bring someone for big items; don't let anyone into your home if you don't need to.
- Keep the conversation in the site's messaging until you trust the other person.
- Never share a verification code you get by text or email: it's the key to your accounts.
Common scams
- "I'm abroad, I'll send a mover": fake buyer, fake payment.
- Overpayment then a refund request: the first payment will bounce.
- A rental or chalet too good for the price, an "away" owner asking for a deposit: never pay before visiting and signing.
- "Mystery shopper" or cheque-cashing job offers.
- Links to a payment or "delivery" page: never enter your banking details.
Rentals
In Québec a landlord may ask for the first month's rent in advance, nothing more. No security deposit, no post-dated cheques. Information: Tribunal administratif du logement.
If you're a victim
- Stop all contact and keep the messages.
- Report the ad or conversation on the site.
- Call your bank.
- Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre: 1-888-495-8501.
- Sûreté du Québec: 310-4141 (or 911 in an emergency).
