Installing a heat pump this fall: the rebates still available

The $5,000 federal grant that was widely discussed is no longer available. This fall, Hydro-Québec's LogisVert program provides the financial assistance. Ottawa has just announced a new program, which is not yet open.

A relative may have told you that they received $5,000 from the federal government for their heat pump. This was likely accurate, but it was two years ago. This fall, most of the programs people talk about are closed. For a regular heat pump, the financial assistance still available is the LogisVert program, from Hydro-Québec.

On October 8, the federal government also announced a new $2-billion rebate. This program has been announced, but it is not yet open. Details are provided below.

We verified each program on its official page on October 11, 2026. As these programs change quickly, we recommend checking again before you sign anything.

LogisVert, the only program currently providing assistance

Hydro-Québec indicates that applications are being "processed normally" (notice dated October 8). The amounts were updated on September 10.

The calculation method often surprises people. LogisVert provides assistance based on the unit's heating output at -8 °C, expressed in thousands of BTU/h, and not on the output printed in large type on the box. This is the figure to request from your installer.

UnitLogisVert rebate
ENERGY STAR air-source heat pump (central or wall-mounted)$50 per 1,000 BTU/h at -8 °C
ENERGY STAR cold-climate air-source heat pump$120 per 1,000 BTU/h at -8 °C
Multi-unit bonus (since June 15, 2026, conditions apply)+ $100, for up to $220 per 1,000 BTU/h
Geothermal, new installation$750 per 1,000 BTU/h
Geothermal, replacing an end-of-life system$250 per 1,000 BTU/h, up to $18,000 per address
Heat storage unit alone$15,000
Heat storage with central heat pump$22,000

(The $140 amount for "very high efficiency" units was withdrawn on August 25, 2025.)

Here is a concrete example. A cold-climate model producing 24,000 BTU/h at -8 °C qualifies for 24 × $120, or $2,880. The same output in a standard model qualifies for $1,200, nearly three times less. It is therefore worth asking the salesperson before making your choice.

Eligibility requirements

All four of the following conditions must be met:

  • you own the house;
  • you are a Hydro-Québec customer;
  • the unit is ENERGY STAR certified;
  • the installer holds an RBQ licence.

Applying

  1. Have the unit installed first. The application is made after the work, not before.
  2. You have 9 months after installation to apply online, on the LogisVert portal.
  3. Keep your documents. According to Hydro-Québec's checklist, you must provide:
  4. your customer number and meter number;
  5. the invoice, which must show the date, your name and the same address as your proof of ownership, the installation address and date, the installer's name and RBQ licence number, the ENERGY STAR number, the model, the BTU output, the GST and QST numbers, the price and the word "Paid";
  6. a photo of the unit's nameplate, on which the model and serial number are legible;
  7. proof that you own the property, such as your municipal tax bill.

For any questions, the program can be reached at 1 833 396-1888 or info@logisvert.ca.

Hydro-Québec reminds the public that it never solicits by telephone or door to door. If someone comes to your home "on behalf of Hydro-Québec" to sell you a heat pump, that person does not represent Hydro-Québec.

The free heat pump for lower-income households

Hydro-Québec was installing a heat pump free of charge in lower-income households. For 2026-2027, the program is full. We recommend watching for its return next year.

The new federal program: pending

On October 8, 2026, the federal government announced a national heat pump rebate with a budget of $2 billion. For the moment, it is not possible to register. The rules, the dates and how the program will work with LogisVert have not been published. It is also not yet known whether a heat pump installed before the program opens will be eligible.

If you are not in a hurry, it may therefore be reasonable to wait a little before signing a contract. We will update this article as soon as the details are published.

Closed programs

ProgramStatus (October 11, 2026)
Chauffez vert (Québec, replacing oil or propane)Ended March 31, 2026
Rénoclimat (Québec)Open, but the official page mentions only insulation, air sealing, doors and windows, not heat pumps
Canada Greener Homes GrantClosed in Québec since September 30, 2025
Canada Greener Homes LoanClosed, as funds have been exhausted
Oil to Heat Pump Affordability Program (federal, up to $10,000)Last applications accepted July 31, 2026. If you have already applied, you have until January 31, 2027 to send your receipts

If you still heat with oil, please note that since December 31, 2023, it has been prohibited in Québec to replace or repair an oil heating system more than 20 years old in an existing building. The end of Chauffez vert does not change this rule.

Dual energy

If you keep a backup heating system (oil, propane, gas or pellets) with a central heat pump, Hydro-Québec's Rate DT switches heating to the fuel when the temperature drops below -12 °C or -15 °C, depending on the region. We encourage you to discuss this with your installer.

Installers in the region

Before signing, check the contractor's licence in the RBQ registry. Without an RBQ licence, LogisVert assistance cannot be granted.
